New Balance's cutting-edge, conceptual Tokyo Design Studio delves into adaptability on the molecular level. The TDS Niobium Concept 1 takes its name and inspiration from the chemical element Niobium. A crystalline metal with a hardness on par with Titanium, slow rate of oxidization and high levels of ductility (the ability to be deformed without rupturing or breaking), Niobium is considered a technology critical element.
Basically, naming something after Niobium carries certain connotations, and the TDS Niobium Concept 1 does not disappoint. A 3-way, modular construction featuring removable gaiters and sockliners means that the shoe can be worn as a simple slipper, a slip-on clog, or a full, ankle-length shoe. The silhouette also takes inspiration from high performance fishing gear. A waterproof, eVent liner, ballistic mesh coating and weatherproof toecap offer maximum protection from the elements. A weatherproof toecap, texturized midsole, TPU support and suede accenting complete a ruggedly stylish design.
